USCIS Director Discusses Plan for New Deferred Action Program Policies

The Migration Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. will host an event examining the Obama administration’s immigration policy change, known as deferred action program.
This program was announced by President Obama in June and allows qualified illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children to remain here.
Last Friday, the Department of Homeland Security announced a series of guidelines for the program which include: Paying a $465 dollar fee, submitting fingerprints and undergoing a background check.  This deferred action immigration program is set to take effect on August 15, 2012. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will make applications available online at that time.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Alejandro Mayorkas will discuss the application process and policies that the agency has announced to implement the program.
A panel discussion will follow on the challenges of implementing the new program and meeting the needs of eligible applicants.
Panelists include: Muzaffar Chishti, director of the Migration Policy Institute at New York University School of Law; Marielena Hincapié, Executive Director of the National Immigration Law Center; and David Martin, former principal deputy general counsel for the Dept. of Homeland Security and professor of International Law at the University of Virginia School of Law.
